Dietitian in Your Cart: Dairy

This week's 'Dietitian in Your Cart' topic is: Dairy. Jump into my cart and see how I decipher my dairy products at the store.

I love cheese, milk, yogurt, and butter. With my knowledge as a registered dietitian, my taste buds have grown and my ingredient list has shrunk with my dairy choices. I have always enjoyed the common milk over cereal and having yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit for snacks. However, I have not always loved different hard and soft cheeses, or plain Greek yogurt.

With age and my career choice, I was not going to encourage others to try new things if I wasn’t practicing what I preached. So, I tried feta, bleu, provolone, swiss, colby jack, and gouda… They were unbelievably 'goud-a'.*Had to* I kept trying Greek yogurt and plain yogurt. I adapted to the taste and loved being able to flavor yogurt just how I liked. Not only did I enjoy adding these new options to my diet, but I finally learned to flip the package over and look at the ingredients.

Please note, my recommendations are generalized and not specified to each individual's unique health needs. Individuals with specific health conditions (kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and more) should speak to a registered dietitian for a client-centered approach for dietary needs.
